TATTOO AFTERCARE
Keep this reference after your appointment. Healing varies by size, placement and person; a tattoo can look healed before the deeper layers are ready. Follow your artist's placement-specific instructions and confirm your follow-up plan.
DAILY CARE
- Leave the wrap on first. Keep the covering on for 2–4 hours (or as your artist directs) so the surface stays protected while it settles.
- Wash gently. Clean hands first, then wash with unscented soap and warm water. Remove all ointment and residue without scrubbing; pat dry with a clean paper towel.
- Moisturize lightly. Apply a thin layer of unscented lotion or aftercare balm 2–3 times a day. Thin is right — heavy layers trap moisture and slow healing.
- Keep it clean and dry. Wear clean, loose clothing over the tattoo. Do not re-wrap it at home; let it breathe between washes.
- Leave the flaking alone. Itching, light flaking and small scabs are normal. Never pick, scratch or rub them off — that pulls ink out and can scar.
WHAT TO AVOID
No soaking for 2–3 weeks — skip pools, hot tubs, baths and the ocean; showers are fine. No direct sun on the healing tattoo; once healed, use sunscreen to keep lines and color sharp. Skip alcohol-based products, ointments with petrolatum beyond what your artist recommends, and abrasive scrubs. Keep pets, gym equipment and shared surfaces from rubbing the area. Avoid tight footwear or clothing over a healing tattoo.
HEALING STAGES & REMINDERS
- Days 1–3: fresh work
- Redness, slight swelling and fluid weeping are normal. Keep it clean, expect slight ink loss into the wrap or while washing.
- Days 4–14: flaking & itching
- The surface peels like a sunburn. Moisturize, never pick. Surface healing takes about 2 weeks; deeper layers take up to a month.
- Weeks 2–4: settling
- Skin may look slightly shiny or dull. Keep moisturizing and avoid sun until the skin returns to normal texture.
- After healing: touch-ups
- We cover a free touch-up within 3 months on work we did, as long as aftercare was followed. Message the studio to schedule.
WHEN TO GET HELP
Some tenderness and redness on day one is expected. Increasing pain, spreading redness or warmth, oozing pus, hot skin, foul smell, fever or feeling unwell need prompt medical assessment. A heavy rash or allergic-looking reaction to aftercare products also deserves a check.
If you think the tattoo may be infected, contact the studio and a medical professional right away — do not delay medical care while waiting on a reply.
