PIERCING AFTERCARE

Keep this reference after your appointment. Healing varies by placement and person; a piercing can look healed before the inside is ready. Confirm your piercer’s placement-specific instructions and follow-up plan.

DAILY CARE

  1. Clean hands first. Wash thoroughly before cleaning. Otherwise, leave the piercing alone; do not twist, turn or play with the jewelry.
  2. Use sterile saline for external piercings. Choose wound wash containing 0.9% sodium chloride and water only. Gently rinse and follow your piercer’s cleaning schedule; more cleaning is not better. Do not mix homemade salt water or use contact-lens solution.
  3. Dry gently. Use clean disposable gauze or a paper product, without scrubbing or picking crust. Avoid reusable towels that may snag jewelry.
  4. Reduce pressure and snagging. Keep bedding, clothing and items that touch the area clean. Avoid sleeping directly on a healing piercing.
  5. Keep initial jewelry in. Ask a qualified piercer about fit checks, downsizing and changes during healing. Do not force or change jewelry yourself.

WHAT TO AVOID

Avoid alcohol, peroxide, harsh antibacterial products, ointments and cosmetics on the piercing. Skip swimming and soaking in pools, hot tubs, lakes or the ocean during healing. Avoid friction, rough play and contact with other people’s body fluids near the piercing.

PLACEMENT REMINDERS

Ear, cartilage & facial
Keep pillowcases, phones, glasses and headphones clean. Avoid pressure from sleeping and snagging when styling hair.
Lip, cheek & tongue
Maintain gentle brushing and flossing. Rinse with clean water after eating or drinking; use alcohol-free, peroxide-free mouth rinse as directed without overusing it. External saline is not a mouth rinse. Avoid playing with jewelry, wet kissing and oral sexual contact during healing. Arrange professional downsizing to help protect teeth and gums.
Navel, nipple & surface
Choose clean clothing that does not rub or catch. Surface anchors need ongoing care and professional checks if they become irritated.
Intimate piercings
Ask for a private, placement-specific care plan. Avoid trauma and body-fluid contact during healing; discuss protective barriers and when activities can safely resume with your piercer.

WHEN TO GET HELP

Some early tenderness, localized swelling and light-colored crust can occur. Increasing pain, spreading redness or warmth, pus, fever, chills or feeling unwell need prompt medical assessment. Heavy bleeding or rapidly worsening swelling also require urgent care.

Trouble breathing or swallowing, or rapidly increasing mouth or tongue swelling: call 911 or seek emergency care immediately.

If infection is suspected, do not remove jewelry on your own; ask a clinician whether it should stay in. Contact the studio for jewelry-fit concerns or routine follow-up, but do not delay medical care.
